How many times have you caught yourself picturing adventurous things you’d do, great outfits you’d wear, life goals you’d achieve? And how many times have you actually gone and done it?

We all do it. We picture ourselves doing the things we’ve always wanted to do, travelling to countries we’ve never been to, being the person we so very wish to become. And visualizing our dreams is a great thing. As long as it doesn’t stay in this phase for the rest of your life.

There are so many people around me who are blessed with such great talents, such strong personalities, such potential. And it always makes me sad when this potential is wasted. Why? Maybe because they’re scared. Or too humble. Or just really lazy.

I believe that everyone is good at something. And I also believe that if you have dreams, no matter what they are, it means that you’re already capable of achieving them. I believe that you already have the inner power to make them come true since otherwise they wouldn’t have come to you. They wouldn’t have caught your attention. So whatever your dream is, however ridiculous it might seem (people were laughing at me when I told them I wanted to study in the UK 5 years ago – I mean, I’m still not accepted but I will make it), you don’t need to have any doubts. Because dreaming it is already the certainty of being able to make it come true.

The question is, will you? You can do it. But you have to choose to do it. We all have this strange tendency to throw everything on the ‘future-self‘. One day you will learn Chinese. One day you will start doing some exercise. One day you will treat others more kindly. One day you will become an actor. Or a singer. Or a writer. And this is how the world loses its amazing actors, singers and writers that are never going to be born.

Because ‘one day’ very often means ‘never’. We tend to picture our future as a very bright and perfect one. In this future, we do the things we love, look as we’d love to look, we are surrounded by loving people and we enjoy our life. In this future, we are endlessly happy. But the truth is, this future does not exist. And it never will. Life will never be perfect. There will always be troubles. But you can try to approach to this dream about yourself and your life and then, you can actually realise one day that you don’t have to picture ‘the perfect you’ or the ‘perfect life’ anymore. Because you are happy as it is. That of course doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have goals. I believe we should always have some goals because there is always some space for improvement, as my wise teacher of theatre says.

But there is a world of difference between just a dream and an actual goal. You can’t just lie in your bed all week and watch Netflix while saying that you’ll be an actor one day. It’s a shame but it doesn’t work like that. Life will not just simply give you what you want. You must take it yourself. You must get up, set your mind to something and then actually go and do it. Otherwise you will spend your life doing things you don’t like, being a person you don’t like and dying with a huge regret in your heart.

I, for instance, still have many dreams that I haven’t yet managed to achieve. But I’m on my way. And I think that one of the most important things in chasing our dreams is to sit down, grab a piece of paper and write down what we plan to achieve this year, this month, this week and I personally also plan my days. It might seem a bit crazy – but it isn’t. It’s the most useful way to complete your goals and actually move further with what you do. And you don’t have to stick to the schedule for 100% but it’s always good to know what you need to do today. You’ll see the results in the course of time. You’ll also feel so much better at the end of the day. And most importantly, your potential will not be wasted – which makes me so so happy as if there is one thing I totally hate, it’s a wasted potential (I know I already said it but it just really bothers me).

If you actually realise that your time on this planet is limited, I hope you will have a little different view on the world and that it will help you with achieving your goals. It is depressing, I must admit, but it’s also very encouraging. If you want to change your life, go and change it. It might be hard. There might be obstacles. It might take a long time. There will be ups and downs. But in the end, it will be worth it. Because at least you gave it all you had.

So go and do it. This might be the only life you have. Do not waste it.
